We’ve all seen the rage about the disappearing 9-patch. As a scrap quilt, I love the look, but I wanted to create it with my scraps, focusing on only 2 1/2″ squares, 4 1/2″ squares, and 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. I did not cut things into quarters; I just wanted to sit at my sewing machine and mindlessly sew the needed units.

Utilizing a light background allowed the fabrics to pop, and this one leaned heavily toward Autumn colors. A leaf-style machine quilting would accent those colors. I may have to practice some free-motion quilting with leaves to see if I can perfect it enough for this quilt.

Scrap Quilt Options for the 9-Patch Variation!!

As I played around with color placement, I found just how many options this scrap quilt has. The background in light this one and the results are like mine above. You can use a dark or gray background and end up with beautiful results. But wait a minute! What if you used both light and dark as your background? Using both light and dark in this pattern will give you additional layouts. See the graphics below. The blocks alternate, dark in the upper left corner and the upper right corner for the first row, then lower left and lower right for the following row.

Using batiks or hand-dyed fabrics also speaks to my creative heart. I may have to start a box for the alternative design too.

Layouts

But wait, there is another option I will share. And, by no means are there only a few options, just like the log cabin block; this block will give you more than I have shown here. It is sort of like coloring outside the lines.

You can also create stripes with this pattern. I would love to see what kind of layout you ended up with! Share your ideas – who knows, maybe I will create another scrappy project inspired by your ideas.

Scrappy Project Boxes

I have mentioned a couple of times about starting more projects – like I need more. My creative side often gets overwhelmed when I am on sensory overload. I use a photo storage box for my projects. It keeps everything together and organized. The boxes measure 11.2″ x 7.8″ x 4.5″. It is incredible how much they hold. My larger scrappy projects started with everything in one of these boxes. I often have scrappy pieces left over.

The Scrappy Disappearing 9-Patch Variation pattern is on the scrap quilt page. If you haven’t followed each month’s post, several other patterns are listed on that page.

What I like about this scrap quilt:

  • It goes together very quickly.
  • There are so many fabric options and color placements for this quilt.
  • The more variety of fabrics (color and texture), the better the results.
  • There is no right or wrong way to do this pattern.

I would love to see what you are working on this month. Feel free to comment below or share on my Facebook page.

Until next time.
