2026 Block of the Month with a Twist

Welcome to the 2026 Block of the Month – With a Twist

block of the month

I’m excited to kick off something new for 2026 — a Block of the Month with a Twist! Each month, we’ll spin the challenge wheel to determine the color and/or fabric type for that month’s block, adding a fun element of surprise to the creative process.

The spin will happen live on my Facebook page, and I’ll also record it so you can catch the replay anytime. Each month’s video will be shared alongside the block instructions, making it easy to follow along at your convenience. To join the Facebook page, please answer the questions. Send me a message if you need help with this.

This playful approach to a Block of the Month is designed to keep things fresh, inspiring, and just a little unpredictable — the perfect way to spark creativity and keep the excitement going all year long.

Fabric Choices

Some months may focus on color, others on fabric style — think batiks, florals, plaids, tone-on-tones, novelty prints, and more. No two spins will ever be quite the same… or maybe they will! 😉 Either way, the goal is to explore how different fabrics and color choices can completely change the look and feel of a block.

Grayscale Directions

The block directions will be shared using a grayscale layout, allowing you to easily adapt the design to your own fabric choices. I’ll also be sharing the scrappy fabrics I use each month, but the primary goal is to meet the challenge of the spin while embracing the beauty of scrappy sewing in your own way.

Each block will use four fabrics: a background plus three additional colors. The pattern will be shown in grayscale, which simply indicates where each value goes — not the exact colors you need to use. This gives you plenty of freedom to interpret the design in your own way.

You might choose to keep your background consistent by using the same color family throughout the quilt, or you may decide to change it up from month to month. The remaining three fabrics are where you can really play with value and contrast. For example, in one month you might choose two darks and one medium, whereas in another month you might choose a light, a medium, and a dark.

Each month, I will determine my values based on the Challenge Wheel and the materials in my scrap baskets. This will be a lesson in “flying by the seat of my pants” and being ok with it!

This flexibility allows you to meet the challenge of the spin while still creating a quilt that feels cohesive, creative, and uniquely yours.

Block of the Month

This project is meant to be creative, flexible, and fun — not rigid or stressful. Whether you plan carefully or sew on the fly, there’s no wrong way to participate. I’ll be sewing right along with you and sharing my progress throughout the year. Each month’s post will happen about an hour or so after the challenge spin, so I can grab my fabrics, put the block together, and take pictures to add to the post.

Ready to see what the Challenge Wheel lands on? A fun way to spend 2026!
More details coming soon — and I’d love to hear your ideas and suggestions!

  1. I don’t need a new project but maybe I do! I’m late to the party but can’t wait to get started!

  2. I am really enjoying c making the mystery quilt. I haven’t joined the FB group yet as I don’t want spoilers. I have found a few quantity mistakes in the instructions. On step three and fifteen.
