Welcome to the 2025 Mystery Quilt
I’m thrilled to share this mystery quilt pattern with you. Writing the instructions took longer than I expected, but I’m so excited to finally share it! This quilt is versatile and can be made in a variety of colorways, depending on your personal preference. You can stick to a single color palette, like I did, or get creative with multiple colors. You could choose three colors with a neutral, or select two shades from the same color family, add an accent color, and a neutral. The choice is yours, and it all depends on the level of contrast you want.
Fabric Colors for Your Mystery Quilt
The sample quilt uses shades from the blue family. I chose light blue, medium-light blue, medium-dark blue, and dark blue. This was the color scheme I was working with when Hubby saw the design and suggested I make it in these tones. As you’ll see, when the quilt is complete, the light fabric creates a striking pattern, and the greater the contrast with the light fabric, the more defined the design will be.
Using Greyscale
If you are unsure that your fabrics will work, take a picture and edit it to show the greyscale version. This is my favorite part of participating in a mystery quilt, but it can be stressful for others. If you don’t want to do a single colorway in your quilt, choose a medium and a dark of one-color family. Then, choose an accent color with a medium-dark value that works well with that color family. Finally, add a light fabric.
Additional Color Family Options
Here are two more color scheme ideas: Start with your medium and dark fabrics, then choose an accent color and a light fabric to complete the look. There’s no “wrong” way to choose your colors—value is the most important factor to keep in mind.
To be honest, I initially considered using greens with a burnt orange accent, but when Hubby commented on the design, I decided to make the quilt in the colors he liked. Sometimes, having someone special in mind helps me stay motivated to finish a quilt, especially when replacing well-loved quilts that are starting to show their age.
Can We Go Scrappy?
If you’re feeling adventurous, going scrappy is absolutely possible! The key is to keep your color families separate and follow the suggested values. If you decide to go this route, I’d love to see your finished quilt top!
Fabric Requirements – based on 40″ wide fabrics
- Light: 1 3/4 yards
- Medium – Light: 2 3/4 yards
- Medium – Dark: 2 yards
- Dark: 2 1/2 yards
You will receive the cutting directions for each step. Save your leftovers, as you may be able to use them later. The quilt is 72″ square and can easily be enlarged with borders. You will lose the design if you try to make fewer blocks. That’s not to say you can’t make fewer blocks and develop your own layout design in the end.
