Easy Scrap Quilt in Blues

Squares Create an Easy Scrap Quilt

Easy Scrap Quilt with Blues

I doubted this pattern until I saw the finished results, and it is an easy scrap quilt. Mine happens to be done in Blue, but there are endless possibilities with this one. Reproduction fabrics, plaids, novelty prints, baby colors, and any color of the rainbow will work with the pattern. For me, the more variety, the better, but I can see this also works well for a limited palette.

Squares and Rectangles

Start collecting those squares and rectangles. All the squares, both small and large, are your scrap fabrics. The rectangles are your background or supporting fabrics. They create the sashings. The size of the squares and rectangles can be adjusted to your preference. I utilized 2 1/2″ squares, 4 1/2″ squares, and 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles.

When I first laid out the pattern, I stressed a bit about color placement. That doesn’t make for an enjoyable quilting experience. I decided just to start randomly picking out squares. There shouldn’t be an issue if you have enough variety in style and value.

Fabric Options

Easy Scrap Quilt in Brights

I created some samples in my EQ 8 program and am saving more squares and rectangles for the next variation. I like the idea of doing a variety of bright fabrics with a cream background or pastels with a white background. We can’t forget the reproduction prints!

Easy Scrap Quilt in pink reproduction fabrics

In the pink reproduction fabrics example, the sashings are also random. Use medium to dark fabrics for the squares and light for the rectangles.

Choose a dark background instead of a light background, and it changes the look altogether. Have fun playing with the fabrics for this pattern. Your quilt’s size depends on how many squares and rectangles you cut.

You can find the Scrappy Blue Squares pattern on the scrap quilt page. Several other patterns are listed on that page if you haven’t been following each month’s post.

What I like about this scrap quilt:

  • It goes together very quickly.
  • There are so many fabric options for this quilt.
  • The more variety of fabrics (color and texture), the better the results.
  • There is no right or wrong way to do this pattern.

I would love to see what you are working on this month. Feel free to comment below or share on my Facebook page.

Until next time.
