What is the most common size for a quilt? Quilt Sizes?
The most common size for a quilt depends on many factors. There are industry standards for quilt sizes, but what works best for you will depend on how you want your quilt to hang on your bed. It also depends on your mattress thickness and if you have a box spring under your mattress. Below, you will find a chart that will give you a general quilt sizes measurement. Chart of Quilt Sizes.

Chart of Quilt Sizes
This chart provides just the basics when looking at quilt sizes (listed in inches). It will provide a starting point.
To fine-tune the process to your quilt, it depends on the bed. First, measure your mattress width. Standard sizes are listed in the chart of quilt sizes to the right. Next, decide how much drape you want for your quilt.
Quilt Drape affects Quilt Sizes.
When determining your quilt drape (how far you want the quilt to hang down the sides of the bed), you have to decide what look you like best. There are three basic commercial styles: Comforter, Coverlet, and Bedspread.
- Comforter Size – this quilt is slightly longer than the mattress thickness. It should completely hide the mattress. The length of the drape depends on your mattress thickness. The standard mattress thickness ranges from 8″ to 14″.
- Coverlet Size – this quilt drapes down slightly lower than the bed frame rail.
- Bedspread Size – this quilt will drape almost to the floor, covering the mattress, box spring as well as bed frame.
To help you decide what works for you, take a gander at pictures from department stores that carry bedding. Are there pictures that you are drawn to?
How to Measure
First, start by measuring your mattress top. Decide how far down you want your quilt to drape.
Mattress width: ______________ + Mattress drape x two: __________ x 2 = ___________ quilt width
See the graphic below for the example.
Next, measure the length of your mattress top. Before starting this, you need to decide if you want a pillow tuck or not. If you want a pillow tuck, it will add about 20″ to your quilt length.
Mattress length: _____________+ Bottom mattress drape: ___________ + Pillow Tuck (optional): _______

I love for my quilts to hang just a couple of inches off the floor. I might have a quilt hog at my house. If I want to stay warm, especially in the winter, I need to make sure there is plenty of drape on the quilt for all three sides of the bed.
Don’t feel like doing the math? Print out the chart of quilt sizes and hang it up in your sewing room for reference.
The above information is just a guide. Don’t feel that you have to follow the rules. Do what makes you happy. If you have a bed skirt on your bed, you may want your quilt to fall about halfway between the box spring and the floor or just slightly below the mattress. It truly depends on the look you are going for.
