Jack’s Chain Project: 9-Patch Progress
This month I am focusing on the 9-Patch units for Jack’s Chain. This is the easy part, although there are so many 9-Patches to create. Maybe, I can find a day when I forget everything else and lock myself in the sewing room.
Right now, when I look at the 9-Patches, I do not see the look I want. There is too much color, but then I remind myself that the other parts of the quilt are background fabrics. The triangles and hexagons are all background fabrics. The colors should show movement throughout the quilt.
Creating 9-Patches using Strips
The strip method was definitely quicker. Honestly, I have a few more to put together, iron, and sub-cut before I start sewing 9-Patches. It will be essential to press the blocks carefully. The small pieces tend to skew easily. No wonky blocks are necessary for this quilt.
Utilizing fat quarters for the strips, I found less fussiness needed when pressing the strips. With the shorter strips, I could lay the whole thing on the top of my ironing board; nothing was hanging over the side and pulling on the strip. I found more accurate strip units when it came time to sub-cut them.
Jack’s Chain Quilt Size
How adventurous do I need to be? This question has been bouncing around in my brain as I have played with the fabrics. It is calling for a king-size quilt; in fact, I know the pattern will pop even more. On the other hand, I don’t want this to end up as a project in a box waiting to be completed and ultimately forgotten. In the end, I decided to add natural muslin for the background. When I couldn’t find enough hand-dyed fabrics for the background, in the end, I decided to add the natural muslin.
Stay tuned for Jack’s Chain updates, probably once I have the 9-Patches done. I am excited to see how things look once I start adding triangles and hexagons.
