Block of the Month – With a Twist

Block of the Month 2026Scrappy

Happy New Year and Welcome to the 2026 Block of the Month with a Twist! It is time to get out your scrappy fabrics – this year, we will be focusing on using up those scrap fabrics.

I’m so excited to kick off a brand-new year of creativity with the 2026 Block of the Month with a Twist! This year is all about embracing flexibility, having fun, and letting creativity lead the way — and it all starts with our very first spin of the challenge wheel. Let’s get those scrappy fabrics ready to go!

Each month, I’ll share a live video on my Facebook page, where we’ll spin the wheel to determine the color and/or fabric type for that month’s block. Since the spin happens live, I won’t have a completed block in the focus colors and fabrics right away. Instead, I’ll share the block design in grayscale, based on the graphic, so you can begin planning and envisioning how your own version might come together.

Wheel of Challenge Recording

Once the spin is complete and I’ve had time to sew, I’ll update this post later today with my finished block using the selected colors and fabrics. This allows us all to experience the process together — from inspiration to creation.

This project is meant to be fun, flexible, and inspiring, whether you’re sewing along in real time or catching up at your own pace. So grab your scrappy fabrics, get comfortable, and let’s jump into the first month of our 2026 Block of the Month adventure.

Let’s get started!

The directions will live on the main 2026 Block of the Month page, and I’ll include a direct link in each monthly post so you don’t have to search for it. My goal is to make this easy and enjoyable to follow along, whether you’re sewing right away or jumping in later.

Block of the Month Units – Creating HSTs, Flying Geese Variations, and Square in a Square

When you review the directions, keep in mind that you can absolutely adjust how you create the units. Whether it’s Half-Square Triangles (HSTs), Flying Geese variations, or Square-in-a-Square units, feel free to use the methods you’re most comfortable with. There’s no one “right” way — use the techniques that work best for you and your sewing style.

The most important thing is that your units finish at the correct size when you’re done. As long as the measurements are right, everything will come together beautifully. This is your project, so make it work for you and enjoy the process along the way.

Each month, you’ll notice that the main block sits inside a framed design. When selecting your fabrics, you may want to keep the frame fabrics consistent in value from month to month to help create a cohesive look across the quilt. This can help the blocks feel connected, even as colors and patterns change.

As we move toward the final block, you’ll also have the option to use a more complex sashing and cornerstones if you’d like to add extra interest and detail. This is completely optional — just an added design element for those who want to take it a step further.

Think of it as another opportunity to personalize your quilt and make it truly your own while still following the overall structure of the project.
