Quilt UFO Buster: May 2023

How are you doing on this year-long endeavor to finish some quilt projects? It is time for a new Quilt UFO to work on – ready to find out what number has been pulled for May? Remember, it isn’t about being perfect; it is about making forward progress and working on projects.

May’s Project number is… 3!

My number three holds a special place in my heart. This project was started back in the day – when I was going through some difficult times. A couple of decades later, I am going to finish.

The curved pieces are hand stitched. Hand-dyed fabrics are used as cornerstones and block centers. The background is a natural muslin.

This pattern was chosen because it would be difficult, in my eyes. Concentration would be needed to create it. That focus gave my brain and heart a break from the stress.

The picture to the left is the pile of parts that constitutes May’s UFO! It’s been a while since I have looked at this project, but I fell in love with it all over again. While it is imperfect, it helped me through many stressful situations.

Time to Sort out the Pieces

A bit of sorting needed to take place to remember how I wanted this quilt to go together. But, I could sense the feeling of peace as I organized. Even though I worked on this through difficult times, this project is like an old friend. It brings comfort and a smile to my face.

This project will be an easy one to work on. Once I laid out the pieces, I was so excited – I had forgotten about the secondary curve pattern that emerged! You should have seen me dancing around my sewing room when I realized.

Creating a Plan

Because the cornerstones are small, I will work on this quilt in sections. After that, the four sections will be put together, creating the lap quilt.

Pondering the step after the top is finished, should it be hand-quilted or machine-quilted? My heart of hearts is saying hand-quilting.

That bridge will be crossed once I have the top done. There are advantages to either option: hand-quilting or machine-quilting. The background areas are calling for medallion quilting designs.

Share your results, even if you haven’t finished your projects. The sharing keeps many of us motivated. However, it sometimes adds to my project list because I like what I see.

Here is my April project. The top is finished, which was my goal. This quilt is the next one slated for the quilt machine. The binding will be a different story because, of course, there aren’t any of the fabrics left.

Now to find an hour or so here or there to keep knocking these projects off my list. I won’t rush through May’s project; I want to enjoy putting the finishing touches on this one.

I would love to see what you are working on this month. Feel free to comment below or share on my Facebook page.

Until next time.
