Step 1: Mystery Quilt 2023
Are you ready to get started in Mystery Quilt 2023? This free mystery quilt is geared toward scrap quilts. This will be a quick post as the focus will be gathering fabrics and following the cutting instructions. The directions are written that way. Get ready to use up some of those scrap fabrics!
I created the queen-size one. All of my scrappy fabric fit into the box shown to the right. I used the same size box for the background fabrics to give you a reference.
If you prefer a more controlled color palette, wait for each installment to see what is being made. You will be cutting out for each post rather than getting it done beforehand.
The more variety you use, the more interesting the results. There are options if you want to limit your color range.
2-Color Option
For a 2-color quilt option, see the suggestion below.
First, choose a variety of prints – florals, geometric, plaids/checks, abstract, dots, etc. WKeep to one colorway within the variety of prints, but use a range of values.
Next, for the background, use one color or multiple fabrics that all read the same from a distance.
Tips and Hints
Note: You may be able to get multiple looks from one fabric, especially if it is a larger-scale print or has varying colors across the width of the fabric. Cut out a “window” that measures 2″ outside and 1 ½” inside. I included a graphic on the Step 1 cutting directions, but depending on your printer, it may not print out at the correct size.
