Mystery Quilt Quilting with Tamara

Are you ready to start this mystery quilt? First, I have a couple of tips.

  • Print off or download the directions right away.
  • Add a piece of fabric to the cutting directions for the steps.
    • Utilize the fabric swatch page to keep your fabrics straight. See the link below.
  • Label your pieces after you have made them.

Let’s Get Started

It’s time to cut some strips from your LIGHT, MEDIUM-DARK, and DARK fabrics. After completing the first part of Step 1, I had about 32″ of the strip set left over. I was able to get 29 units out of the strips. Set aside any of your leftovers; they may come in handy for a later step.

When I start a mystery pattern, I usually cannot sew the same day I cut out the fabrics. I use my baggies to keep all the pieces and parts together. In this step, we are only working with strips.

This is your first chance to see how your fabrics play together. We will make a couple of different 4-patch units to start the adventure. Don’t be discouraged if you feel like your colors aren’t working. You can always email me or post a question below if you have questions.

Creating 4-Patches

I create 4-patches using strips, but if you are going completely scrappy or don’t care for the strip method, please do what works for you.

When pressing the strips toward the darker fabric, take care not to skew the strips; keep them as straight as possible. The seam line is used to help you keep your subcuts straight.

It is nice seeing the 2-patch units start to pile up; we have progress here! When you match up the 2-Patches with opposite colors facing, you should be able to nest the seams. They should fit tightly together.

Chain sew the 2-patch units into 4-patches to save time. Once you have pressed the seam to the side, double-check that your 4-patch units measure 2 1/2″ square. Trim off any extra slivers there may be.

You will repeat the 4-patch process with the Light and Dark fabric strips. When I completed all the 4-patch units, I placed them in separate baggies so I didn’t have to sort through them when I was using them in later steps.

Tips & Hints:

  • Don’t worry if the fabrics don’t seem to be working together at first. Trust the process, and feel free to reach out for help if you’re unsure.
  • Stay organized, label your pieces, and always check the measurements of your finished units to ensure they’re accurate.
