Step Three – Mystery Quilt 2025

Mystery Quilt Quilting with TamaraQSTs

Welcome to Step Three of the Mystery Quilt! Before diving in, take a moment to read through the directions a couple of times before you begin. This step will guide you through creating several combinations of Quarter Square Triangles (QSTs), so it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the process before you start.

A Note on Labeling

I’ve received questions about labeling, so let me clarify. I find it helpful to label as I go because, honestly, I can’t always sit down and complete a step in one sitting. Labels help me track where I left off, making it easier to pick up right where I stopped.

Fabrics

For this step, you’ll begin by cutting your fabrics to create Half Square Triangles (HSTs) first.

There are many methods for making these units; I’ll share one approach here. But feel free to use your preferred technique and adjust the cutting instructions to match.

Drawing Lines for HSTs and QSTs

When it comes to marking the fabric, you can either draw lines on the back of your squares or press them on the diagonal. Both are personal choices! I sometimes sit down and draw the lines, and other times, I prefer to press the squares and get moving.

For this step, I chose to press my squares. Don’t worry—chain sewing is still an option! As shown in my photo, I chain-sewed in both directions. Remember that if you’re unsure, trimming will be necessary later to ensure everything is the right size.

When following the pressing directions, your seams should nest together nicely. Run your fingers along the seams—you’ll be able to tell if they’re not lined up properly.

The next part of the process is trimming them to size. I included the fundamental directions in the pattern that I use with beginners. If your QSTs seem off, check the pressing. It doesn’t take much to skew these units.
