Mystery Quilt 2025 – Step 4 Square in a Square (SIAS)
This installment of the mystery quilt highlights the Square in a Square (SIAS) unit. It’s a quick and easy step that shouldn’t take long to complete. Once you’ve finished, be sure to label your units for easy reference later.

Let’s Get Started on this Step of the Mystery Quilt
This week, you’ll work with squares of two sizes and three colors. It’s a straightforward process, but color placement is important as it will affect the blocks later on.
Before cutting strips for the squares, check what fabric you have left from previous steps. I prefer having a bigger piece of fabric left over at the end of the project than smaller bits and pieces.
Diagonal Lines

Now, when creating the SIAS, you have a couple of options when attaching smaller squares to larger ones.
- Draw a line on the wrong side of the smaller squares
- Iron the smaller square in half on the diagonal
- Wing it and eyeball the straightness of the sewing line
With the example to the right, I didn’t do either of the first two options. I have to admit that my sewing line isn’t as straight as I would like. I will be changing what I do next.
Chain-Sewing the SIAS

Even though you are sewing on the diagonal of the block, you can still chain-sew this unit. The biggest tip is to make sure you are doing the correct color placement. Create one block to use as an example.

This block can be used in so many ways. The four corners create opportunities for a secondary pattern to pop.
Chain-sewing can create such a messy-looking pile. But it did speed up the process!
