Step 7: Mystery Quilt 2025

It’s finally time to put together a block for this Mystery Quilt! Since I’m a visual person, I always begin by laying out my pieces to match the picture. This method works wonderfully—unless, of course, you get distracted (which I may or may not have done a time or two). But hey, it’s all about playing to your strengths, right?
Block 1 Layout
Let’s dive in! I start by stacking the pieces for chain-sewing but don’t forget what I mentioned earlier about those distractions. If you’re not chain-sewing, laying out the pieces individually is a great option. By organizing the units ahead of time, I ensure the orientation of crucial elements like the Quarter-Square Triangles (QSTs) and 4-Patches.

A Quick Reminder: Always double-check the orientation of your units before you start sewing—especially if there’s a little helper in the sewing room! While I adore having my granddaughter play with the fabrics, a few of my 4-Patches ended up turned in the process. She had a blast sorting through the scrap basket, though, and I think we may turn that into a color-sorting game later!
Pressing Tips – If you’re using spray sizing or starch, one application should be enough for the block. However, if you need to press again, a light spritz of water will do the trick. But if you love that extra stiffness that starch provides, feel free to add more—it’s all about what works best for you!

Creating the Block Rows
Once the rows are pieced, it’s time to press those seams and sew the rows together. As I lay the block out again, I double-check that everything looks right, and then I’m off to sew—you are almost done with Block #1!
Once you have your rows together and your block pressed, it should measure 10 1/2″ square. Take the time now to make any adjustments. You will be thankful when it comes time to sew the blocks into a quilt!
