Welcome to Quilting With Tamara. The 4-Patch Sawtooth Quilt Block is a variation on the Sawtooth. By switching the HST’s (Half Square Triangles) for 4-Patches, you enhance the focal point around the star. Color placement highlights the star in the center of the block. 4-Patches provide a beautiful opportunity for a secondary pattern to emerge.

4-Patch Sawtooth Quilt Block – Design a quilt with this free quilt pattern
The 4-Patch Sawtooth Quilt Block is one of my favorites because of the different looks you can achieve from one block. Large-scale prints or novelty fabrics for the center square instead of the SIAS (Square in a Square) can create an entirely different type of impact.
Think about what you want to highlight in this block. Do you want to see the stars, the chains, the outline around the stars? Take a couple of minutes to play around with color placement in this block. Don’t forget to try adding sashings and corners.
4-Patches Create Interest
The 4-Patch block can add movement to the quilt, or as shown above, it can provide a highlight to a focal point, in this case, the star. 4-Patches are one of the most straightforward blocks to use for an impact. You can use one in the center to carry the “chain” through the block.
