Welcome to Quilting With Tamara! The Framed Variable Star Quilt Block is a variation on the classic Variable Star. It offers so many options depending on color placement. Play with other layouts such as on-point or with sashings and cornerstones. Take some time to play with color placement, especially when using sashings and cornerstones. Secondary patterns can appear when you least expect them.
Star Quilt Blocks – framed variable star quilt block
At first glance, this block may overwhelm beginning quilters. Check out the directions for a simpler way to create this block. My favorite part of creating patterns is breaking the blocks down into manageable pieces. Once you train your brain to look at the block in smaller sections, you may find an easier way of putting it together.
This quilt block can be tackled by a beginner. It just looks more complicated than it truly is.
Variations for the Variable Star Block
The center of this block would work beautifully with a larger scale print. It doesn’t necessarily need to be the same fabric used in the outside frame. Don’t be afraid to play around with fabric placement. Use this pattern as a jumping-off point. I love seeing this quilt in the opposite colorway – Light star points and darker frame. Draw the block on graph paper and get out the color pencils or use a computer program to test other colorways.

Due to some issues with embedding the pdf file for the quilt block direction, I have switched to the link instead. It should open on a new page. From that page, you can download or print the pattern. Please let me know if you have any issues with it. You can send me a message through my contact page or Facebook Messages.
