Let’s Conquer those Projects – Quilt UFO Buster 2023
Have you picked your projects for your Quilt UFO Buster list? See this post for more information, but the basic idea is to pick twelve projects and number them from one to twelve. Each month I will announce the number to work on. Below is the pdf to track your progress from your quilt project list. Time to get started on the Quilting UFO challenge.
As I prepare for this year-long event, I gather the pieces and parts that I will need. Batting, backing, directions (for all but one project), and organized projects are ready. I am looking forward to seeing my unfinished project pile decrease.
Quilt UFO – January’s Number
I hope you labeled all your projects! With the craziness of the holidays, I am drawing January’s number early. We will start the new year with number five. As a result, my Black and White Stack and Whack is the January UFO for me.
I love this pattern. You never really know what you will end up with when you start. However, some mirrors can be used to give you a general idea.
I taught many classes based on the technique from Magic Stack-n-Whack® Quilts by Bethany Reynolds. You can find this book, as well as others, here.
My book has been well-loved, and because of this is looking a little rough around the edges. The pages haven’t started falling out, so that says something.
Quilt UFO Fabrics
The Black and White fabric was outside my comfort zone, but I loved the results. There will be a burgundy accent color – however, I am not sure what I am doing for the layout. I will have to wait to see how the blocks will go together. With the multiple sizes, I won’t be using traditional rows.
The fabric I used is called Ink Blossom II, designed by Sue Marsh for RJR Fabrics. Here is an up-close shot of the label. I found fat quarters of the fabric here, but I couldn’t find yardage. The RJR Fabrics website has the black background fabric, but I didn’t see the white one. It is from 2015, so that is to be expected.
Picking up the Pieces
I have quite a few blocks already finished and even more cut out and ready to sew. They were stored in a bag for way too long. A good press with the iron is needed.
I am so glad I pinned the cutout blocks together – they may be a bit wrinkled, but I can work with that. I will need to be careful when pressing them; it won’t take much to stretch them!
Because I am creating blocks of differing sizes, I can make good use of the fabric. There will be little waste. I still have about a half strip of eight layers left – still pinned together and waiting to be cut out. I will double-check to ensure things didn’t shift before I cut out more blocks.

Take a minute to join the Facebook page. Share what you are working on in January. Let us be a support system for finishing projects. If you put a project down because you ran into issues, share it with the group. I am sure a solution to the problem can be found.
I would love to see what you are working on this month. Feel free to comment below or share on my Facebook page.
Until next time.
