Scrap Quilt Pattern: Hearts

Scrappy Hearts – Scrap Quilt Pattern

Here is the newest scrap quilt pattern – Scrappy Hearts. I am in the process of creating my own, but this could take a while. I am using leftover fabrics from my projects to create the heart blocks. For the background, I am utilizing a natural muslin, which is leftover from the machine quilting. I love the old-fashioned look muslin gives the quilt. The scrappy fabrics are indeed very scrappy. I will share a picture here as I continue to work on this pattern. I didn’t want to wait until I finished my quilt to share the pattern.

Scrap Quilt Options

When many think about a heart quilt, the first thought is often in reds and pinks. I don’t usually follow the rules; I tend to do my own thing when it comes to quilting. While playing with my Electric Quilt 8 software, I found that I loved the look of this quilt when I used a variety of colors. In fact, that is the reason my graphic above isn’t in red and pink. It’s ok to think outside the box. We are often surprised by the results.

Why Muslin?

I’ve been asked why I chose muslin for my background in several scrap quilts this year. When these quilts have been washed and dried, they make me feel nostalgic. It reminds me of quilts my grandma made. If I didn’t want the added scrappy colors of the cornerstones, I could use just sashings: so many options and so little time.

The colors absolutely pop on a dark background. I may be in trouble with this pattern because there are so many options to try. I would love to see what you come up with!

The Scrappy Hearts pattern is on the scrap quilt page. If you haven’t followed each month’s post, quite a few scrap patterns are listed on that page.

What I like about this scrap quilt:

  • It goes together very quickly – although the 1 1/2″ squares for the heart points can be a bit fussy.
  • This pattern works well with pastels, brights, and reproduction fabrics – the look changes depending on your background choice.
  • The more variety of fabrics (color and texture), the better the results.
  • There is no right or wrong way to do this pattern.

I would love to see what you are working on this month. Feel free to comment below or share on my Facebook page.

Until next time.
