November Block of the Month – Challenge Wheel Time!

It’s time to add another block to our growing quilt! Once again, we’re building on the blocks we’ve made over the past several months, and I think you’ll enjoy seeing how everything continues to come together. But this block of the month can be enhanced with the sashing and borders – although you can do a block-to-block placement.
I’ll admit, when I first sat down to work on this month’s block, I was dreading writing the directions. Sometimes, just looking at a block can make it seem much more complicated than it really is. But once I pushed my negative attitude aside and started breaking it down, I realized how easily this block comes together! You are dealing with Square in a Square (SIAS) units, and Flying Geese – the rest are just squares and rectangles.
I thoroughly enjoy creating patterns and writing directions for them. It’s one of my favorite parts of quilting. Unfortunately, life sometimes has other plans and gets a little crazy, keeping me from slowing down, relaxing, and enjoying some much-needed time in my sewing room. I guess even those of us who love quilting need a little nudge to get started sometimes!
I’m also running a little behind this month and haven’t had a chance to make my own November block yet! So, if you run into any problems, find something that doesn’t make sense, or spot an issue in the directions, PLEASE let me know. Sometimes another set of eyes is exactly what a pattern needs. We’ll figure it out together!
Now, let’s spin that Challenge Wheel!
Our November fabric challenge is:
Choose your fabrics based on this month’s challenge, and let’s see what everyone creates!
A Few Tips for This Block of The Month:
- Press carefully! This block has several smaller units, and it’s important to avoid stretching or distorting them. Lift and press rather than dragging your iron across the fabric.
- Keep those units square! Take a moment to check your measurements as you go. Accurate units will make putting the larger block together much easier.
- Pay attention to orientation! Some of the units are directional, so double-check the diagrams before sewing. It’s much easier to catch a mistake before stitching everything together!
- Take your time with the flying geese. Pay close attention to the direction of your diagonal sewing lines, especially when adding the second corner.
An Important Reminder
- Our quilt will NOT be finished in December! We still have pieced sashings and borders to make in January to bring everything together.
I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s November blocks! Keep those sewing machines humming, and remember, it’s all about enjoying the process and having fun along the way.
