Scrap Quilt Patterns – A Way To Use Up Those Scraps
Scrap Quilt Patterns are an excellent way to use the leftover fabrics from previous projects, and free scrap quilt patterns are even better. I have acquired many scraps, but I fill decorative baskets with them. Even though scrappy fabrics look pretty in the basket, I know that creating something with the fabric would be better—it’s time to share the free scrap quilt patterns.
Scrap quilts will always hold a special place in my heart. I remember my grandmother’s quilt – a scrap quilt made from outgrown clothes of family members (siblings and cousins). This was my first actual quilt, and I was hooked! There is something to be said about being wrapped in the love of a handmade gift.
Simple Scrap Quilt Pattern
What do you see when you look at a scrappy quilt? Often, it isn’t a complicated pattern. Most of the time, you will see a variety of fabrics repeated in the same block. The design may be organized by color or value; it may be completely random. When you finish your quilt, you will become an expert at that block.
Simple Blocks Wanted
If you are new to quilting, starting with a 4-patch or 9-patch block will result in a beautiful quilt when you are done. Let’s not forget the simple square patches. This is a quick and easy way to use up your leftover fabrics – unless you decide to use 1 1/2″ squares. That style of quilt is known as a Postage Stamp Quilt. Do a quick search for “Postage Stamp Quilt Pattern,” and you will find that the size of the block will vary, but the overall look is similar.
My Struggles – Mixing Prints in My Scrap Quilt Patterns
This has been a struggle for me; I am drawn to fabrics that read as solid when you step back (batiks and hand-dyed fabrics rank at the top). It is helpful to use the same fabric or even the same color family for the background, whether light or dark. It gives my eye a place to rest as I look at the quilt.
Remember, there are No Rules
I challenge you to remember that there are NO RULES. You may read books, blogs, and newsletters that explain the “RULES” to you. Think about all the new styles of quilting that have evolved over the past hundred (or more) years. They were often created by quilters who broke the rules.
I will share block patterns that tend to use 2 1/2″ and 4 1/2″ pieces – perfect for using the precut packs of fabric. Don’t get locked into only those sizes; be open to adjusting the unit sizes based on your desired results. Enjoy the free scrap quilt patterns shared below. Scrap Quilt Block Patterns
This page will continue to change as I add more blocks to my site. Stop back often to see what’s new in free scrap quilt patterns. You can also sign up for my Facebook group to see the updates.
Check out the Quilt Library Page for 12-inch blocks.
Contact me if you have a block request. I will do my best to add it to my page. Writing the directions and testing the pattern will take time, but I enjoy the challenge. I love seeing your blocks and quilts – even your fabric choices and color combinations. It is so inspiring to me. Please share.
Until Next Time…
