Too Hot to Quilt?

Summer Quilting Ideas When It’s Too Hot to Quilt

Summer is finally here! The flowers are blooming, gardens are growing, and many of us are spending more time outdoors. But if you’ve ever tried wrestling a queen-size quilt through your sewing machine when it’s 90 degrees outside, you know quilting and summer don’t always make the perfect pair!

The good news? You don’t have to put your creativity on hold until cooler weather arrives. Summer is actually the perfect time to tackle projects that are lighter, smaller, and a little outside the traditional quilting box.

Try a Summer Quilt

Have you ever considered making a quilt without traditional batting? You have options!

Instead of batting, try using a 100% cotton flannel sheet as the middle layer. Flannel provides just enough softness and structure while creating a lightweight quilt that’s perfect for:

  • Picnics in the park
  • Camping trips
  • Watching fireworks
  • Summer cabins
  • Beach evenings
  • Keeping in the car for impromptu adventures
  • A light cover on warm nights

An inexpensive flannel sheet is often wider than quilt batting, making it an economical option for many quilt sizes. The finished quilt drapes beautifully and washes up soft with very little bulk.

Bonus Tip: Prewash the flannel sheet to reduce shrinkage before quilting.

Choose Cool Summer Fabrics

A summer quilt is the perfect excuse to pull out those cheerful fabrics you’ve been saving!

Think about using:

  • Fresh florals
  • Bright citrus prints
  • Nautical themes
  • Patriotic reds, whites, and blues
  • Watermelons and strawberries
  • Sunflowers
  • Bees and butterflies
  • Lake or camping fabrics
  • Soft pastels
  • Cool blues and aqua tones

These quilts also make wonderful gifts for weddings, graduations, campers, and vacation homes.

Too Hot to Quilt? Try One of These Instead!

Not every quilting day has to involve wrestling a large quilt through the machine. Here are plenty of productive ways to enjoy your hobby while staying cool.

  • Organize Your Fabric Stash

Sort fabrics by color, designer, theme, or project. You’ll be amazed how many forgotten treasures you rediscover. I keep it simple and organize my scraps by color. In saying that, I don’t collect too many novelty or reproduction fabrics.

  • Cut Fabric for Future Projects

Prepare strips, squares, half-square triangles, or binding while enjoying the air conditioning. Future You will be grateful! Just remember to include the pattern with your pre-cut fabrics! There have been a few times when I have no idea what pattern went with a bundle of pre-cut fabrics!

  • Label UFOs

Pull out those unfinished projects and place them in project bags with labels, patterns, and notes about what still needs to be done. This is also a good time to sort the UFOs by priority.

  • Design New Quilt Patterns

Sketch blocks on graph paper or use quilt design software to experiment with layouts and color combinations. This is one of my favorite ways to stay creative in the heat.

  • Make Quilt Labels

Create personalized labels while your sewing machine stays cool.

  • Piece Small Blocks

Instead of working on an entire quilt, sew a few blocks each day. Before you know it, you’ll have a whole quilt top ready for autumn. The Block of the Month is perfect during the summertime- a quick, easy project each month.

  • Learn a New Technique

Practice:

  • Foundation Paper Piecing
  • English Paper Piecing
  • Curved piecing
  • Y-seams
  • Appliqué
  • Free-motion quilting on practice sandwiches

  • Clean Your Sewing Machine

Remove lint, replace needles, oil your machine (if recommended), and give your sewing area a good cleaning. This ideally should be done several times a year depending on how much quilting and sewing you do.

  • Photograph Finished Quilts

Take advantage of the beautiful summer sunshine to capture gorgeous photos for your blog, Etsy shop, or social media. There are so many photo options this time of the year. Don’t let that turn you off from taking outside photos in the winter – they are beautiful too!

  • Prepare Holiday Gifts

Christmas may seem far away, but handmade gifts always take longer than expected! I start collecting now – fabrics and supplies for my holiday gifts.

  • Sort Your Scraps

Turn scrap bins into organized strips, squares, crumbs, and usable pieces for future scrap quilts. Last week I started this, but since I don’t have air conditioning in my room, I save that work for early morning when it is cooler.

  • Read Quilting Books

Curl up with a cold drink and gather inspiration from books, magazines, or your favorite quilting blogs. Any “quilt” themed books you want to share? I am always looking for ideas.

  • Hand Stitch in the Shade

Binding, embroidery, English Paper Piecing, and hand appliqué are perfect projects to enjoy on the porch. I remember way, way back when I stated that I would never hand quilt. You know how the saying goes: “Never say never.”

  • Create a Summer Mood Board

Collect fabric swatches, paint colors, photographs, and inspiration for your next quilt collection. I have my own version of a mood board…and mine is usually electronic. I add notes or ideas to a photo I see when they inspire my creative side.

  • Visit a Quilt Shop

Sometimes all you need is a little inspiration! Browse new fabrics, notions, and patterns—you may come home with your next favorite project. This helps me every time! Although it is also why I have way too many projects to make.

Remember…

  • Every season has its own rhythm.
  • Winter is for cozy quilting marathons.
  • Spring brings fresh inspiration.
  • Summer is perfect for planning, organizing, and lighter projects.
  • Fall is when all those summer preparations turn into finished quilts.

Creativity doesn’t have to stop just because the temperature rises. Whether you’re stitching a lightweight summer quilt, organizing your stash, or simply dreaming up your next masterpiece, every small step keeps your quilting journey moving forward.

So grab a tall glass of iced tea, turn on the fan, and enjoy creating—one stitch at a time.

What’s your favorite thing to work on during the summer months? Share your ideas in the comments—I always love hearing how other quilters beat the heat!
