May 2026 – Block of the Month

Challenge Wheel Block of the Month

May Block of the Month

May’s Block of the Month feels like a turning point in the Challenge Wheel journey. This month’s design builds directly on the units we’ve been creating over the past four months, and you can really start to see how those foundational skills come together in a more cohesive way. There’s something satisfying about recognizing familiar construction steps and realizing just how much more comfortable they’ve become.

Color Value in the Block of the Month

One thing that stood out to me right away with this block was the impact of color value. It truly makes or breaks the overall look. In my test block, I didn’t quite achieve enough contrast between Color #1 and Color #2, and it shows. That said, I still really like how the block turned out—it has a softer, more blended feel. But it’s a good reminder that value contrast is something I need to be more intentional about, especially once I complete my Challenge Wheel block. Even though this month, I had incorporated an ivory tone-on-tone, I want to create another block with better contrast.

Practice Makes Perfect

Because we’ve been using many of the same types of units, you might find yourself starting to feel like an “expert.” I’ll admit that word always makes me hesitate a bit—there’s always more to learn and ways to improve. Still, there’s no denying the growing confidence that comes with repetition and practice. For me, that showed up in how well my half flying geese (or partial arrow units) came together this time. Everything lined up nicely in the test block, which is always a small victory worth celebrating. Of course, the real test will be how things come together in the final Challenge Wheel version.

Pressing Seams Open

Just like last month, there are moments in this block where pressing seams open gives the best results. It can feel a little different if you’re used to pressing to one side, but it really helps reduce bulk and improve accuracy in certain areas. A helpful tip: always set your seam first by pressing it closed before opening it up. That extra step makes a noticeable difference.

Block of the Month – Pieced Border Frame

Another exciting element this month is the introduction of a pieced border framing the block. It adds a whole new layer of interest compared to a plain frame and gives a glimpse of how the quilt is starting to evolve. And here’s a little hint of what’s to come—we’ll be revisiting pieced borders in future blocks to help create balance across the entire quilt.

Keep experimenting, keep learning, and most importantly, have fun with it. Each block is another step forward, and it’s exciting to see everything begin to come together.
