Row by Row Sampler – April

Row by Row Sampler Scrap Quilt 2024

This month, we will be creating a row of Greek Squares for the Row by Row Sampler. This block really held no appeal until I did them scrappy. The Greek Squares block lends itself to a scrap quilt. You have a decision to make before starting the block. Are you going to keep the scrap fabrics the same within the block, stick to a color family within the block but scrappy, or random scrappy across the whole row? As you can see, I kept the block in a color family, but each scrap fabric is different.

What is in store for April?

April is one of those months when you don’t know what kind of weather you will have from day to day. In the northeast, many of us are itching to get out in the garden and play in the dirt. The soil is too cold for me to plant my flowers, although seeing the early spring flowers pop out is a great reminder. I’m looking forward to watching as our yard and garden slowly wake from their winter sleep.

Getting Started on the Greek Squares

First, decide how you want your blocks to look. Then, pick fabrics and finally start cutting them out. Once I decided to go scrappy within a color family for each block, I started creating the HSTs (Half Square Triangles). This is the longest step for me because they need to be squared to the correct size. Although there is more work, I love the results when I am fussy.

If you decide to create your HSTs using another method, make sure they are finished to the correct size. I will eventually try other methods again. I’ve used several in the past, but I like this method when I am creating a pattern.

Easy Scrap Quilt Block – Creating the Side Units

This block goes together so quickly! The side units are just a background rectangle and a scrappy rectangle. Chain-sewing these units speeds up the process. Once I have created all the little units, it is time to put the block rows together.

What I like about a 6″ block for the Row by Row Sampler is you can use a larger variety of fabrics. It creates interest and texture in the scrap quilt.

so excited to see these blocks come together! I love the scrappy look within the block, but I can’t wait to see the whole row. Seeing all the colors makes me smile.

I have two blocks for each color family, so I need to decide what scrappy color goes into each block. Don’t overthink this part; when you step back and look at the row, it all looks good.

Row by Row Sampler Results for this Month

Each month, I think that I cannot love a row more, but this scrappy Row by Row Sampler is quickly becoming my favorite pattern. I am so excited to share my results and to see the results of your hard work. Below is the result of my row. I have already attached it to the other rows.
