Challenge Wheel Block of the Month

June Challenge Wheel Block of the Month – Let Your Creativity Lead the Way!
This month’s Challenge Wheel block is one of those wonderfully satisfying makes—it comes together quickly, but still gives you plenty of room to play and make it your own. I worked my sample block in greyscale again so you can clearly see the value structure without distraction, and it really highlights how powerful light and dark placement can be.
Challenge Wheel Fabric Choice
Here is the video for the fabric color and/or style for this month’s block. There is always that little bit of excitement, as well as worry, that the choice is going to be difficult to add to the block. So far, things haven’t been too bad. But let’s see what the wheel says for June.

UPDATE:
I’ll need to be thoughtful about how I incorporate the red into this block. It’s a fabric I hadn’t originally planned to use much in this quilt, but the Challenge Wheel clearly has other ideas for me!
Over the next day or so, I’ll be pulling fabrics together for my updated block. I’m leaning toward a barn red, which should coordinate nicely with another block in the quilt that already features red.
I also need to pay closer attention to my color values. Right now, there isn’t enough contrast between the background fabric and Color #1, which I’ll need to adjust to create better definition in the design.
Once I’ve reworked the block and have it sewn together, I’ll be sure to share the updated version with you!
Block of the Month Questions
This month, I am going to address some questions that have been asked. All of them point to “rules.” Most of the time, I am not a big one for following the rules; I tend to follow creativity. The only one that I am following for this challenge is the fabric choice given by the Challenge Wheel. If your creativity is directing you differently – embrace it!
“Do I have to use the color values shown?” in this Block of the Month
Nope! Absolutely not.
You are the master of your quilt—you get to choose the fabrics that speak to you. Think of the example as a guide, not a rulebook. This is your opportunity to stretch your creativity, experiment a little, and maybe even reach for fabrics you wouldn’t normally choose.
Sometimes the most unexpected combinations turn into the most beautiful results.
“Do I have to use only 4 different fabrics?”
Nope again!
You can absolutely use as many fabrics, colors, and prints as you like. Go scrappy if that’s your style—this block can handle it.
The only thing to keep in mind is value contrast. When you’re using a lot of different fabrics, make sure you still have enough difference between lights, mediums, and darks so the design doesn’t become visually chaotic. A little planning goes a long way here.
“Do I have to make the smaller units like HSTs and Flying Geese like the directions say?”
Nope—you’ve got options here too.
The instructions are simply one suggested method for building those units. If you have a favorite way to make Half Square Triangles or Flying Geese, use it! The important part is not how you get there, but that your units finish at the correct size so everything fits together beautifully.
Efficiency matters too—choose the method that feels smoothest for you.
Final Thoughts
This block is quick, flexible, and designed to keep things fun. Think of it as a creative playground rather than a strict pattern. The more you allow yourself to experiment, the more personal and unique your quilt will become.
I can’t wait to see what you create this month—especially if you take the Challenge Wheel prompt and run with it in your own way!
Happy stitching!
